artist - ilona glastonbury

" Ilona Glastonbury is a Barossa based artist with a passion for old pressed metal. She has stripped her work of images preferring to allow the rich stories contained in her found materials to emerge. The result is richly textured nostalgic wall pieces with a contemporary graphic twist verging on sculpture.
All the colours and patterns on the pressed tin are original. The artist’s interest is to create a sense of presence with the altered and rearranged materials.

Says Ilona, ‘I have always been a collector and hoarder, making art using materials touched by time. I love objects with a heavy patina of age about them. I am very excited about this body of work I have embarked upon as I am able to express my love of the Barossa and the history through it.’

Ilona scours antique shops, auction houses, second hand stores and garage sales to source her materials. The pressed tin has been part of the South Australian landscape and its settlement, and often has many layers of paint that crack and peel to reveal wonderful colour combinations. Ilona’s distinctive layering of the circles intensifies the patina inspiring many domestic memories, from white weddings to country baking, landscape to the change of seasons. "
