Marcus’ formal qualifications are impressive but he believes that qualifications associated with life’s experience are just as important. It is this very appreciation of life’s experience and his sensitivity to his surrounds that richly inform Marcus’ sculptural work often through the appreciation and use of previously loved ‘junk’. In Marcus’ sculpture, discarded objects are assembled and presented in new and unexpected ways. We can only guess at their previous life in his intriguing and beautifully made pieces, their rich patina hinting at a previous history.

Marcus’ formal qualifications include a Degree in Fine Art (Sculpture} University of Melbourne, Victorian College of the Arts, 1990 and an Associate Diploma in Art, North Adelaide School of Art, 1988.

Informal qualifications include being a dedicated full time single father to two teenagers Atticus and Rosina. The warmth of his domestic environment frequently spills into his work with retro logos and domestic objects collaged into the sculptures.

Marcus has a firm technical understanding of his materials which include bronze, iron, and steel. He fearlessly transforms steel into a bird and bronze into delicate rivulets. Like a collagist, he often embellishes the work with found items creating a decorative and celebratory elegance as in Bird of Paradise.

Marcus has worked on community art projects with fellow artist Roland Weight who also appears in this exhibition. He has helped to plan, conceptualise and create many large scale artworks for public space including a recent town’s entrance artwork based on local cup gum motifs for Parndana in Kangaroo Island and public artworks for many towns in the Goyder council.

‘I am enjoying making sculptures just for me; I find lots of ideas come from the immediate world around me and are usually to do with nature. Sculptures are often derived from a place. I like that in having a place artworks can make links between us and nature. I often use recycled materials. The colours and shapes add to the composition. So much can be understood from what we leave behind.’

Marcus is happy to create commission based work for clients of Salon Rouge.
